| 9:30 - 10:30 am | CATASTROPHIC INJURY - HOW DO WE EVEN BEGIN TO DEAL WITH THIS? When a catastrophic injury occurs, both the employee and the employer are thrust into a world neither wishes to occupy. From immediate medical care concerns, to how and where to get the best care for the employee, to how the bills get paid, all parties need to work from the outset as a team to assure the best outcome for the injured employee. This session will explore the acute care of the injured employee, along with payment issues (health insurance vs. Workers' Compensation coverage), including addressing order of payment, subrogation, out-of-jurisdiction treatment, quality of care, and applying the Medical Fee Guide.

| 10:30 - 11:30 am | CLAIM INVESTIGATION AND CONTINUING MEDICAL CARE Once the employee has received the necessary acute care, the attention of the parties will turn to investigating the circumstances of the accident and coordinating the employee's long-term care. The employer will have concerns as to how the accident occurred, particularly if there is a third party involved, as well as providing for the employee. All parties will be interested in the employee's medical care and how it is determined and provided. This session will include discussion of the medical and legal considerations that will determine how various parties will proceed in representing the medical and legal matters, some of which are peculiar to Maryland's Workers' Compensation.
